HB #27 Filipino OLINs

Today I finally communicated with Father Xavier L. OLIN, S.J., originally of the Phillipines. I have been trying to contact him for a few years to find out about his surname origin.
It's one of those weird coincidences (?). I had become aware of the Jesuit Father a few years ago via the Internet. Shortly after knowing of him, I was chatting with a Filipino co-teacher, Mrs. CHENG, at a high school here in Los Angeles when for some reason I brought up Xavier OLIN's name. It turned out that she had known him personally for most of their lives. In fact, she knew his email address by heart. "It's a Small World" began playing on my inner-Muzak.
He never responded to my emails, but he did respond to my Facebook message:

"hi jeff, peace!

as far as i can gather from our oral family history, our roots do not go beyond the philippines or asia. my late father mentioned we have chinese roots- and this shows in his eyes and in the siblings'.

i am aware that there are olins, too, in east and west timor.

friends have sometimes asked, jokingly, how i'm related to lena olin, the actress :-)

i suppose your family name is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable; ours is on the second, spanish-sounding style.

i will keep you posted if i come across any new data.

best, xave olin"
